Jim Good, a regional Director for Nations of Coaches wrote,
“I love the phrase, you don't have to be great to serve, but you have to serve to be great.
See, serving is about others. It’s not about you; it’s not about me. Paul reminds us in Philippians 2:3, 'Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility, value others above yourself.' Pat Riley warns us of the disease of me. It's real. I’ve watched it kill many teams, companies, churches, and families. Like cancer, it will spread through the body until claiming victory. Let's be careful not to let this ugly disease be a part of our team, our company, our church, or our family. Establish and develop a culture of 'we over me.
Everyone wants to be great. We desire to be great spouses, parents, coaches, leaders, and friends. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be great. I believe it’s actually biblical to want to be great. However, greatness needs to be about others. That’s what serving is all about. Matthew 20:28 says, “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus was and is great. He made it about others. I Peter 4:10 encourages us with this: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others....”
